My name is Ishwar Jaypal, and I proudly hail from the village of Mathal. I come from a long lineage of artisans, where the traditional craft of weaving has been preserved and nurtured by my forefathers for generations. Around the early 1900s, my grandfather and father practiced the ancient art of spinning local sheep wool by hand, skillfully transforming it into yarn. From this yarn, they crafted intricately designed borders, warm woolen shawls, and khadi fabrics that were especially suited for the hot summer seasons.
This rich heritage of weaving, known as Vanatkam, was passed down to me by my grandfather and father, who ensured that I learned the techniques, skills, and values tied to this tradition. With a deep respect for nature and sustainability, I now focus on using natural dyes to colour various materials such as cotton, tussar silk, mulberry silk, local wool, bamboo yarn, and banana yarn.
Today, I create a wide range of handmade textile products including sarees, dress materials, fabrics, shawls, and stoles. Each piece reflects not only the traditional craftsmanship but also a personal commitment to preserving our cultural heritage while embracing eco-friendly practices. My work stands as a bridge between the past and the present, carrying forward the legacy of artisanal excellence in the modern world.
